Combating Burnout, Company-Wide
Wednesday, November 17, 2021 - Joe Kiedinger
As a leader, it’s in the best interest of your company to prevent burnout in your employees. Not only does it improve morale and overall productivity, but it shows your employees you value their health—increasing the chances they’ll stay engaged and won’t leave.
This week I want to sharesome practical advice from Fast Company to help your company identify, prevent and combat burnout:
Ask employees questions that help you gauge what is currently causing or what could cause burnout. How many hours are they working? Do they take enough vacation days? What would help them to decrease stress related to their job? Simply asking “Are you burned out?” is not enough—you need the background data and numbers to help you gauge what the root cause of burnout is in your office.
Educate your employees on burnout, its causes and its dangers. Then, follow up on their progress and establish a continual improvement plan to keep your employees healthy and happy.
Make changes to your company’s rules and expectations that help lessen burnout.
Communicate your resources internally—remind your employees about the importance of maintaining a work-life balance, your flexibility policy and the resources available to them if they’re struggling (like EAP, for instance).
Do a deep dive into your company culture. Is it actually the job that is causing stress and burnout with your employees? Or is your culture the culprit? Harmful interactions among coworkers and leaders can cause burnout just as easily as a demanding job.
